Evaluation

People seeking psychiatric consultation represent a very diverse group;  and what an individual needs varies a good deal from person to person.  Part of an assessment includes establishing what a patient is looking for.

The meaningfulness of any evaluation rests upon an understanding of a person as a whole.  Diagnostic manuals, medications, different models of psychotherapy, addiction theory, family therapy, and other instruments, all represent clinical tools, some of which are more likely to be helpful than others in a given situation.  The evaluation process usually consists of a collaborative effort between doctor an patient to get a sense of what the problem is, and of which tools are most likely to be helpful.  An initial assessment usually consists of one or two visits.
